IndieGoGo partnership

I wrote an email to IndieGoGo yesterday regarding the possibility of promoting diaspora* on their campaign pages. The idea was that they could place a share widget on their campaign pages similar to those that twitter and facebook have. Here’s the reply that I got today in my Inbox:

Lauren, Dec 10 16:15:

Hi Camil,

Thank you for your interest in Indiegogo and for your kind words!

If you have an innovative partnership opportunity that falls outside of our Partner Page offering, please notify us through our Partner Inquiry Form, here: http://form.jotform.us/form/32277575285161, our business development team will follow-up with any questions they may have.

In the meantime, if you have any questions about how crowdfunding works, how to create a campaign on Indiegogo, or if you’re looking for tips on how to make an upcoming campaign a success, please feel free to contact our Customer Happiness team at support@indiegogo.com.

Thank you for your patience.

Cheers,

Lauren

Let’s talk about it, diasporians!

I don’t get why you present this as a partnership. Social media are a way to spread the word. They already use some, it would be nice if they use ours too, but I don’t see how that is a partner relationship. We have a widget they can use, and that’s it.

Hey @flaburgan, please see below the original message I sent to them:

I’m a diaspora* (diaspora social network https://diasporafoundation.org/) enthusiastic user and would like to ask you something: would it be possible that you help us in adding a diaspora* sharing widget (as you do have for facebook and twitter, for instance) for the campaigns that you promote? It would help us very much, and it would benefit you, too! Thank you!

The reply that they sent to me indicates that they interpret it as a partnership. Please advise as to what I should reply to them or come up with good ideas! Thanks!

Funny, neither Twitter nor Facebook is on their partnership page (and therefore don’t appear to be partners).

Her mentioning their “Partner program” looks like a polite way of brushing off your request, instead of just saying NO.

Be a bit more persistent, you have nothing to lose. Reply to her, thank her, and tell her that you are not referring to a partnership, but instead are asking about the sharing widget, perhaps providing a screenshot. You might want to mention that Twitter and Facebook don’t appear to have official partnerships with them.

Additionally, write to the “Partner inquiry form” she linked to and ask the same there. Perhaps there’s someone else who would be more willing to entertain the idea.

@jcbrand Many many thanks for your input! Maybe we can think together of how to write an email coming from the community and sending it from more than one account - in the name of diaspora* social network? Or maybe someone with more authority than me can do that. If nobody wants to do it, I will volunteer, but I’ll wait for @deadsuperhero and others to reply.

The reply that they sent to me indicates that they interpret it as a partnership.

I’d assume it means that Facebook, Twitter etc. pay Indiegogo to have their sharing buttons appear on the site.

@goob That’s a good observation, actually. I don’t know. On the other hand, @jcbrand says

Funny, neither Twitter nor Facebook is on their partnership page (and therefore don’t appear to be partners).

We just need to decide what and how to write them.

This is crazy (or a misunderstanding), I’m sure Facebook and Twitter never pay to the sharing buttons… In the French community we have a text to ask for the sharing buttons, but we sign it as a “user”.

@mflo That text is really good! Can you be so kind as to translate it into English? My French is not so good. Merci par avance!

@riderplus This is a very good translation by French users from a German user … The thing actually worked and interested some media. But we have to go on and repeat the action…

So I did a G**gle Translate and change it a little bit to make it more general and comprehensive. But you’ll probably have to adapt the text to make it better

As a reader of YOUR MEDIA/YOUR SERVICE/…. and user of the independent and open-source social network Diaspora*, I would be glad if your items online could propose a share button to this site.

To install this button, simply visit http://sharetodiaspora.github.io/about/ and insert the code in your articles.

Increasingly , a new dynamic is developing on Diaspora* and the number of users has risen sharply in recent times. Many do not want to bear any longer the labor up Facebook and others on their personal data !

Diaspora*, through its open-source model and its decentralized technical basis is ideal for free spirits .

It’s pleasant and easy to communicate in Diaspora* adding #tags (# keywords ) to its account. Your interests are certainly alread tagged ! In addition, our community is very open, you 'll have to make your own tags! To learn more: https://diasporafoundation.org/ .

Your entry point to Diaspora * (appointed pod , which is a decentralized server) can be, for example NAME OF POD(S), but you can create your own pod ! Another advantage to the decentralization of these.

I (and probably many others ) would be glad if you simply pass this simple sharing button to the social network Diaspora * , and multiplying your common potential .

SIGNATURE, a user of Diaspora *

Super @mflo ! We’ll polish it a bit and then use it as a template? Can you also post the text on Diaspora Forum? We can use it for further similar cases!

What we need to do is think about an email contact on IndieGoGo that we can send the text to! We can’t just send it to the above support email address, you saw how they replied to me. We have to think about it and I encourage @flaburgan @supertux88 @deadsuperhero @dennisschubert @goob @praveenarimbrathod and others to express their opinion here!

Okay, I’ll post it on the Forum as soon as we have the template!

You can do whatever you want to do.

However, please note that our official financial and legal assets are managed by the Free Software Support Network. If you have contact with third parties, make sure it’s clear to everyone that you are not a projects official. If you raise money, please ensure it’s clear that this is your private initiative to support the project and that is is not delegated or approved by the official team.

Just want to avoid weird issues with tax payments and other fun here.

Thanks a lot for clarifying that to us, Dennis! We’ll try to convince them to put the widget on their campaigns page for free  And nobody will ask for money from them, of course.

And nobody will ask for money from them, of course.

That was more like a general statement, just wrote it here since you pinged me. Thanks!

UPDATE:
I contacted again IndieGoGo, here’s what they replied:

Hi Camil,
Thanks for following up. I see you have been working with my colleague Lauren, I hope you don’t mind if I answer your request.
Besides the sharing tools already in place within the Indiegogo platform, we are unable to add custom share tools on a per-request basis.
That said, it sounds like you are interested in using a widget to share your campaign on a website or blog. You can add a widget using our share-tools—can you please send me a link to your campaign and i’d be happy to point you in the right direction.
Thank you again for your understanding and I look forward to hearing back from you soon!
Cheers,
Josh
