Considering that the (arguably) biggest problem that Diaspora* has is its small user base, I think this feature is quite important. Currently, new users can see no content at all from their friends, which creates the impression that diaspora* is abandoned. The issues that @knutmithut mentioned are closed at the moment, 5252 is the open, unassigned issue that currently addresses this (as far as I could find).
