This is the key message. Probably startup of one of the servers failed for some reasons.

The installation tutorial gave me the command to start up diaspora. What is the proper way to gracefully shutdown diaspora?

Just hitting Ctrl+C on the terminal running script/server is perfectly fine. Alternatively sending SIGTERM to the parent process.
