Dear everyone,
I’ve found the following company that has a good idea where as they pay maintainers for working on open source software, and the money comes from people who purchase subscription to make sure the dependencies are up to date with the latest security updates and other improvement. This might help diaspora find new people to work on the project and also improve the security of the underlying framework. Here is the link https://tidelift.com/about/lifter
Any comments appreciated.
I think fair compensation is an important step in making sustainable community projects. Finding solid models for this seems important.
There are reasons why nobody from diaspora*s core team engaged in this, and the reality is that things are not as simple as “sign up to this service and be happy”. Collecting money is a legal thing, and we as a non-profit project can’t just do that. And while I appreciate @tursiops’s suggestion, for now, that’s a “no”.
I strongly suggest looking at https://wiki.diasporafoundation.org/Donations, which outlines the channels some people are open to donations, and also how people can financially support the project itself and how you can add financial incentives to specific tasks for new contributors. Our current system works well-enough, and as we’ve identified many times before on this Discourse, money is not our issue.
