Replying to a post with a image

At this point one has to link to an image on a client such as Imgur. Do you believe that linking to a non federated image dump is in keeping with the spirit of the fediverse? If you can post a local image in a new post, then why not when responding? Once a local image is on a Diaspora instance, it is encrypted.

Images on diaspora* are not federated. When you send a post with an image to another node, you send an image URL with it, and the other node displays that image as a hot-link from your node. Federating large files such as images kinda doesn’t make much sense - so your images on diaspora* are just as centralized as they are anywhere else, it’s just that your node stores that image, instead of imgur.

Because nobody raised that as a feature request so far, and because nobody implemented an image upload feature into the comment field. As a workaround, you can upload an image in a post privately shared with an empty aspect, and you can embed that uploaded image via the editor features inside the comment.

It’s not. Image files are not encrypted anywhere. They’re not encrypted on disk (unless the server admin set up an operating-system wide disk encryption or something), and they’re also not encrypted during transport (except for TLS during HTTPS) - anyone who knows the URL to an image can view that image.
