Hi everybody.

I have a good news, two mozilla employees are okay to help us organize and host a diaspora* event at the mozilla Paris office. We will have a working space with internet connection, and all we need to work.

We talked about a four days event, as people are coming from quite far away the trip has to be worth the cost.

About the accomodation I propose to ask the lovely diaspora* community for places to stay by night (hotels are very expensive in Paris).

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

<3 awesome ! Looking forward to it :slight_smile:

So awesome! <3

Would be nice to lock these dates within a week or two so could buy plane tickets, they get more expensive as time gets closer… Will defo try to come!

Would be nice, soon, that every one who thinks he is coming, to tell what kind of electric plug he has so we can buy power adaptater :wink:

@flaburgan This is an awesome idea \o/

This is the kind of event I’m looking for, it is a great initiative and certainly I’ll try to be there :slight_smile:

I agree with @jasonrobinson , we should lock these dates within a week or two.

Sounds great! I can’t come but I suppose I can join by pushing commits remotely :stuck_out_tongue:

So, currently these two are winning:

01/10 -> 04/10
08/10 -> 11/10

I suggest we decide asap, during the coming week?

@flaburgan how many people do we have space to work for?

Also, I suggest we consider doing this “properly” and doing a quick community fund raiser to cover some of the costs for participants. At least for me, I’m looking at €200 minimum on flights (if I buy now) + the need to take time off work. Also, while I’ll be totally fine with staying at some persons sofa, it would be so much more convenient for us to just rent a room in a hostel for at least 4 people for example. This would allow maximum flexibility.

The fund raiser could be a low profile campaign just for those that want to support this 4 days of hacking on diaspora. We could even come up with a plan of what to achieve - personally I would like to at least brainstorm of pod migration, if not even work on it if we can agree on a spec… We could agree that travel and hostel costs would be reimbursed for accepted participants to the hackathon.

Fundraising on Bountysource would be simplest. They take a 10% cut which I think is fair. The other option would be to use Indiegogo, but they take almost 10% for paypal payouts too - at least with bountysource any money that would not be used for costs could be used for bounties without losing the 10%.

Opinions?

For example, some cheap private rooms search.

Outside Paris, there’s also a Cerise Hostel in my city. I don’t know the prices, but I can make a jump to it and ask for informations if anyone need it.

It’s only 48 minutes by public transports from the Mozilla office and I can handle the transports tickets.

As I leave near Paris, please let me know asap where you guys are staying so that I can organize transports for everyone.

I doubt Paris is that expensive that we need to commute 2 hours daily? Would be nice to be able to work long days and then go out for drinks etc :slight_smile: Some of the hostels were like 60-80€ for 4 days which imho is not bad for being close to the mozilla office. Of course, not everyone has to stay at the same place.

@flaburgan do you know how flexible hours we can work, do we have only limited access to the office or can we go 24h?

@Jason not too sure about a fundraising, maybe we can simply use the money we have with the FSSN?

I stayed for events until 01:00 AM. Not sure we can stay that long every day though. I have to confirm with the mozilla employees.

As for the number of person, the office is big, we can be 15-20 without problems.

@flaburgan

Be sure! I doubt we can get the FSSN involved in this hackathon in the required time frame.

Why are you not sure? I’m quite sure many community members would love to sponsor some work on the project.

@dennisschubert @florianstaudacher @jhass @goob could you please fill the poll?

I doubt Paris is that expensive that we need to commute 2 hours daily?

Why? That’s what I do every day when I got to school.
Indeed, I do not stay for a drink after the lectures :stuck_out_tongue:

I do not have my planning for next year so, right now, all dates will look the same: I’ll be able to be present saturday and sunda only. When I have the planning, my work-periods will likely be at the end of october but I can’t be sure for now.

@augier and you’re leaving there. We will have only 4 days. Maybe we can check Air b’n’b? But I’d like to fix the date first, then we’ll see what we can do.

I really don’t see why we can’t ask the community for help. What is wrong with that?

I really don’t see why we can’t ask the community for help. What is wrong with that?

Nothing at all! That’s what I proposed in my first message: in my opinion it will be way cheaper to directly ask for accommodation than to ask for money to pay for accommodation. And then we’ll be able to keep money for things we can’t ask freely. So that’s why I propose to first set up a date, then see if this date is fine with mozilla, then ask for people if someone has a place to host us (eventually check that with mozilla too), if we see that’s too difficult, then ask for money and rent a place with airbnb.

What about travel costs? :slight_smile: Also, I really believe having one person there, another there, another at third place, will make it really difficult to work efficiently.

I don’t mind organizing it if no one opposes, using bountysource for example.

But yeah, getting a final OK on the date is of course most important first - so maybe we could set a deadline this wednesday midnight for people to participate in the poll?

I’m very happy to see such an event happen! I am tempted to suggest you to go for the fundraising anyway, with several targets: first the travel costs, second the food, third the hosting if not directly provided by peoples, etc… depending on the amount of money you get. Just make clear it is for the event to take place, and not to see some specific features implemented. :wink:
